DUKE CAMPUSThirty years ago, an unknown African-American filmmaker named Charles Burnett released a student thesis called Killer of Sheep. A strange mix of naturalism and off-hand surrealism, Killer of Sheep sketches out vignettes of life in a working-class Los Angeles neighborhood. The few who saw it early on have spent three decades hailing Burnett’s achievement (and one later viewer, David Gordon Green, swiped the film’s mise en scene and key images for his own student debut, George Washington). Tonight’s 8 p.m. free screening is in Griffith Theater in the Bryan Center and features a 35mm print. THE POUR HOUSEMedian teased us two years ago with his outstanding Path to Relief EP and again last year with an international re-release of the same material. Relief has finally landed, andat its bestit’s worth the wait. First single “Rize” is an anthem for the hip-hop hopeful, as Median comes clean about his past, talking about being raised by women and largely sheltered from a rough lifestyle.
