Edgar Meyer & Chris Thile
Meymandi Concert Hall, Progress Energy CenterEdgar Meyer owns the double bass: He manhandles the instrument, producing clouds of sound that lumber across the sky, raining notes with ferocity before dissipating in ethereal warmth. You may remember him from his collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma, Mark O’Connor and Joshua Bell. He’s playing tonight with mandolin whiz Chris Thile, formerly of Nickel Creek. Thile’s mandolin dances with joy as its sounds shoot into the air in triumphant quick licks. This juxtaposition of double bass and mandolin works because of the skill of each musician. Lines bob, weave and intertwine, the sound rendering the image of a madman dancing through, and with, a storm. Bluegrass, jazz, classical or art music? It’s a lot of fun. Tickets for the 8 p.m. show are $20-$35. Andrew Ritchey
