Armistead Maupin
Carolina TheatreArmistead Maupin has been a literary celebrity since the 1970s, when his much-loved Tales of the City began appearing. Thirty years and half a dozen Tales volumes later, Maupin is almost indelibly associated with San Francisco. Except that he’s from Raleighas he mischievously told the Indy two years ago, “I tell people that three of the most famous people from Raleigh are gay: David Sedaris, Clay Aiken and Armistead Maupin.”
Maupin’s latest novel is Michael Tolliver Lives, which was published last year in hardback and last June by HarperCollins in paperback. It’s a stand-alone novel that focuses on one character from Tales, a survivor of the 1980s in San Francisco who is now growing old quietly, tending to his garden and his elderly mother. At tonight’s 7 p.m. reading in the Carolina’s Cinema One theater, Maupin will be interviewed on the stage by Steven Petrow, a columnist for the Independent.
