Hairspray

Durham Performing Arts CenterIt’s the character Motormouth Maybelle who sings, “They say that white has might/ And thin is in/ Well, that’s just bull/ ‘Cause ladies, big is back/ And as for black/ It’s beautiful!” This song touches upon the central themes in Hairspray: prejudice and tolerance. Originally a 1988 film by John Waters set in bigoted 1960s Baltimore, Hairspray was adapted as a musical for the stage in 2002. Since opening on Broadway, it has won eight Tony Awards and four Laurence Olivier Awards. Now the touring company of Hairspray graces the DPAC stage for an event that may have us dancing in the aisles and wishing we were big and beautiful. This one-night-only engagement begins at 7:30 p.m., and tickets are $30-$60. Visit www.dpacnc.com. Belem Destefani
