Duke Gardens, Duke CampusClosing out the indie rock series at Duke Gardens, N.C. pop-rock legends Peter Holsapple and Chris Stameythe latter played in The Sneakers before they joined forces with The dB’s, and they worked separately with R.E.M. and Yo La Tengotrot out little of the old, focusing instead on their latest joint effort, Here And Now. So maybe this latest doesn’t have the punch of The Sneakers or dB’s, but those were younger bands. This latter-day Holsapple-Stamey configuration relies on veteran refinement and eased-in harmonies to support its solid pop. One expects an outdoor setting to enhance the experience. The Turn of the Screw
Kennedy Theatre, Progress Energy CenterHot Summer Nights at the Kennedy marches on toward summer’s end with a presentation of Henry James’ novella The Turn of the Screw. Reworked and rewritten for the stage by Jeffrey Hatcher, the tale remains true to its original theme of sexual repression and the supernatural, as a young governess charged with caring for two orphaned children begins to see the ghosts of their former caregivers, a governess and a valet who shadow the children and haunt them in their waking life. But this adaptation takes utmost care to unveil another aspect of the critically disputed story: the possibility of madness brewing subtly under the surface as the new governess struggles to discern between reality and fevered imagination.
