Raleigh
Jimmy V Foundation Week

Various venuesThe V Foundation, which has raised more than $80 million for cancer research since 1993, holds its annual Jimmy V Golf Classic this week. Named for the beloved N.C. State men’s basketball coach who died of cancer in 1993, the festivities kick off tonight at 7 p.m. at the Progress Energy Performing Arts Center. For a C-note, you can purchase a raffle ticket for the chance at a new Beemer 128i. The raffle benefits cancer research.

For a cheaper entrée into the good works, Thursday you can visit the classic Western Lanes on Hillsborough Street, now under new ownership and called The Alley, for a cocktail reception catered by The Urban Food Group, LoneRider Brewery, various local wineries and Function Drinks. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. and features bowling, a DJ and special VIP guests starting at 9:30. In between, there’s a bowling challenge for guests at 7:30 and a special video tribute to Jim Valvano and the V Foundation at 9. For more on the bowling, contact Jimmy Poole at jpoole@bowlthealley.com and visit www.bowlthealley.com.

The Golf Classic itself happens Sunday at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course on N.C. State’s Centennial Campus, with visiting celebrities ranging from the A-list (Charles Barkley, Rod Brind’Amour) to, well, Garo Yepremian (remember him, Dolphins and Redskins fans?) and Meat Loaf! Visit www.golfclassic.org for info on the golfing, and www.jimmyv.org/events.html for information on the other events. Zack Smith
