“URBAN RENEWAL: THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY”

POP’S RESTAURANT–Hillside High School graduate and current Yale student Yonah Freemark is devoting a portion of his spring break to speaking to the Historic Preservation Society of Durham about the several sides of urban renewal. Urban renewal utilized the government’s eminent domain to reclaim properties it saw as derelict, hoping to renew them into booming portions of a municipality. The policy often led to urban sprawl, but in Durham it led to the HPSD, a 30-year-old organization whose historic conservation efforts have helped in the formation of Hayti Heritage Center and the preservation of the Carolina Theatre. Tickets to the 11:30 a.m. talk, part of a monthly Lunch & Learn series, are $15. Contact 682-3036 or info@preservationdurham.org.
