OPETH, DARK TRANQUILITY
LINCOLN THEATRE–Those Swedish Metal bands like enchanted forests a whole lot. Opeth’s 2003 album, Damnation, was filled to the brim with that magical, semi-Celtic fairy dust stuff Frodo did jigs to in Lord of the Rings. Of course, the band always peppered their brutal tunes with melancholic interludes and mystical acoustic breaks. But this was a whole record–gone was the perfectly guttural scream of Mikael Åkerfeldt, the hack-sawed time signatures kept by Martin Lopez, the smoking laser gun solos of Peter Lindgren, and Akerfeldt’s deep guitar chug. And while Damnation did much to prove that the band was actually a group of brilliant songwriters (and not just crushing metal gods), it’s nice to see all the tuff-stuff find its way back onto their latest, Ghost Reveries. It’s also nice to see the world’s best metal band in the Triangle. Get loud at 8 p.m. for $23. –Robbie Mackey
