M. TOREZ: HIP HOP MEETS MANGA
HARRISON REGIONAL LIBRARY–Triangle artist Mike Sales, who writes and draws under the name M. Torez, is responsible for an unlikely, cross-cultural heritage: his Type Illy Press and the series of graphic stories it produces, which combine manga (essentially, the printed form of Japanese anime) with hip-hop culture and an obsession with strong women, like one of Torez’ central characters, the single-mother, crime-fighting superhero Nefertiti Jones. Torez’s work is fascinating, a no-holds-barred intermingling of the most unlikely subjects. He discusses it today at 6:30 p.m. at 1313 New Bern Ave.
