Thelonious Monk: Straight, No Chaser
Duke CampusA cinematic addition to Duke University’s Following Monk series, this documentary uses the camera’s eye to celebrate the free-spirited, free-flowing jazz Monk created. Shot for German television in 1967 and 1968 by Christian Blackwood, this footage was never designed for a large-scale cinematic release, but thankfully, this compilation supplies us with both questions and answers to the man’s musical genius and his impending madness as we follow Monk through a European tour, private studio sessions and his personal life.
