There’s a lot more really good music on tap this week. Nothing’s too heavy, and some of the offerings are free. There’s piano jazz in the Duke Gardens on Thursday, courtesy of Duke’s summer music series. On Friday, Duke offers Ensemble Vermillian, performing transcriptions of Italian chamber music, a program that competes with Carnavalito, which lights up the skies in Cary–while in Meymandi Concert Hall, PineCone’s “Down-Home” series concludes with stellar bluegrass artist Rhonda Vincent and the Rage. Saturday night, Color Latino, a fine salsa group featuring lead vocalist Aymeé Garriga, performs in Garner, the N.C. Symphony’s Summerfest series continues in Cary with some fine orchestral fare plus vocalist Ben Vereen, and in Chapel Hill the Triangle Gay Men’s Chorus gives the second (and last) performance of its “Listen to My Heart” program. Finally, Father’s Day brings two events that don’t overlap (!)–a recital at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church by the promising young violinist Gabriel Meza and a concert by the Triangle Wind Ensemble in Bond Park. Readers thus have no excuses this time–let’s get out to listen, enjoy and support live music in the Triangle!

Folks who enjoyed last weekend’s concert by the Raleigh Ringers may wish to sample the work of Bronzeworks, a highly touted youth handbell choir from Phoenix, whose members range in age from 12 to 19. The Ringers are backing the group’s appearance in Raleigh at St. Philip Lutheran Church. The repertoire of the top-rated handbell choirs varies widely, based on the number of players and the types and ranges of instruments available, so there’s a good chance that the Bronzeworks ensemble will be playing music that hasn’t been heard here thus far.
