N.C. STATE PROFESSOR OF ARCHITECTURE ROBERT P. BURNS passed away last year, but he won’t be forgotten. An endowment fund has been set up in honor of the North Carolina native and former head of the School of Architecture. The endowment began with $200,000 to fund an annual lecture and accompanying book. A $100,000 pledge followed from alumni and friends who wish to name the soon-to-be-renovated auditorium in Kamp-hoefner Hall for him, as well.
Burns was known for his work with architect Eduardo Catalano and his lifelong commitment to teaching. He was killed in a car accident in Chatham County last November. A celebration of his life will take place at the Longview Center in Raleigh on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 2 p.m. Those interested in contributing to the endowment should contact the College of Design.
V IS FOR … VAGINA MONOLOGUES. Every year between Valentine’s Day and International Women’s Day, playwright Eve Ensler donates the rights to her script to productions that benefit women’s groups. This year’s Triangle’s productions include one directed by Garrett Eder, a sophomore at East Chapel Hill High School. After being told by the principal that the play’s content was too adult for a school performance, Eder, who is 15, cast three adult actresses. Now he’s looking for a cheap venue for a March 8 performance that will benefit the Orange County Rape Crisis Center.
After reading the play, Eder says, “I just thought, how cool would it be for a tenth grade boy to produce The Vagina Monologues, which is so not high school boy and so based around womanhood and women.”
