Doris loves to sing, which is fine with her folks–as long as those songs are church songs. But when this minister’s daughter in 1940s New York City dreams of singing onstage at the Apollo, worlds collide.
The musical Mama, I Want to Sing (pictured right) is based on the real life story of soul singer and songwriter Doris Troy, whose tunes like “Just One Look” and “Whatcha Gonna Do About It” were chart fixtures during the 1960s and ’70s. This collaboration between the theater and music departments at N.C. Central University features a live band and singers interpreting the music of Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald. Director Karen Dacons-Brock calls the work “a play about following your dreams despite obstacles, a play about having faith in God and in yourself.” 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 general admission, $10 for students and seniors.
