New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and yes, a smattering of Southern states: People are migrating to North Carolina in search of ... well, it can't be progressive politics, but we do have good weather, a cultural amenities, tech jobs, beaches, mountains, excellent food, less traffic and a slower pace of life.
The Internal Revenue Service has released its 2011–2012 migration data, based on tax returns, which tells us who’s moving where within the U.S. That’s important knowledge for social services, transportation forecasters, city and county planners, school districts, real estate developers and yes, even the court system. And for data geeks, it's a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.
Statewide, nearly 133,000 households moved here in 2011 and 2012, a net gain of about 18,000. (Note that household figures are different from the total number of persons, which is higher.) Statewide, most of our transplants hailed from Florida, but people from above the Mason-Dixon Line are settling in the Triangle.
So who’s skedaddling from our state, besides the exodus of public school teachers? In total, 118,000 households bid adieu, with most of them bound for Florida, which seems to have an exchange program with us.
Below we’ve listed three Triangle counties and who’s coming and going.
