Blending Eastern and Western music is no longer a rarity. As hip-hop artists are finding Hindi rhythms as hot as their own remixes, and Asian musicians, like Lisa Furukawa Ray, are incorporating homeland music traditions with their modern work, American radio waves are experiencing culture fusion like never before. Ray brings East and West together once again at Cary’s Six String Cafe on Thursday, July 17. This bilingual, Bjork-inspired song writer and pianist mixes Japanese folk music with her original compositions, as she expresses her life as an Asian-American woman. Accompanied by her “excellent band,” (Deborah Shields on cello and John Metcalf on percussion) and special guest Alysson Light (one of her high school piano students), Ray hits the music hall at 8 p.m. Tickets are $5, and, if you like what you hear, check out her debut CD, This Moment is The Show.
