Votes in two cities last week brought the total number of local governments backing a moratorium on the death penalty to 58. Of those, one quarter are in North Carolina.
On Oct. 29, the city council of Lincoln, Neb., voted 4-5 for a resolution supporting a halt to executions. The next day, the Santa Clara County Council in California passed a similar resolution by a vote of 4-1.
The roster of local governments in North Carolina that have passed moratorium resolutions is: Asheville, Carrboro, Cary, Chapel Hill, Charlotte, Cofield, Davidson, Durham, Fayetteville, Greensboro, Hillsborough, Orange County, Thomasville and Winston-Salem.
