Mark Dorosin, chairman of the Orange County Board of Commissioners, says he plans to run next year for a seat on the North Carolina Court of Appeals.
Dorosin announced the bid in a Facebook post Monday night. He was first elected to the Board of Commissioners in 2012 and was reelected in 2016. For eight years, he has been the managing attorney at the UNC Center for Civil Rights.
“My desire to serve as an Appeals Court judge stems from my belief that the courts too often are out of touch with the people of this state. My work over the last twenty years has been dedicated to helping historically marginalized individuals and communities engage local governments and advocate for their interests. Electing a judge who understands and appreciates those perspectives will produce a more equitable legal process for all North Carolinians,” Dorosin wrote. Dorosin plans to run for the seat being vacated by Judge Ann Marie Calabria, who announced this weekend that she wouldn’t seek reelection. Wake County District Court Judge Jefferson Griffin has also announced plans to run for the seat.
Griffin was appointed as a district court judge in 2015. He also serves as a first lieutenant in the North Carolina Army National Guard. The Court of Appeals is comprised of fifteen judges who hear appeals of district and superior court rulings in panels of three.
