North Carolina Symphony: Play With The Pros

Koka Booth AmphitheatreAmateur musicians take the reins on Saturday for performances of Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World” and Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in the North Carolina Symphony’s annual Play with the Pros outdoor concert.

Young musicians applied to play on the set by answering questions such as “How many hours a week do you play your instrument?” Gentry Lasater, winner of the ensemble’s 2007 Youth Concerto Competition, takes the lead on the concerto.

The show is the first of the Summerfest 2009 concert series at Koka Booth. Later performances include folk songs from the Red Clay Ramblers, Broadway classics from singer and pianist Michael Feinstein, and music from film and video games.

The show starts at 7:30 p.m., but gates open for picnickers at 5 p.m. Symphony musicians host an “instrument zoo”for children to play with various orchestral instrumentsat 6 p.m. Tickets start at $20; children 12 and under get in free. Margaret Hair
