Chapel Hill
Dan Deacon & Ultimate Reality
Local 506Anyone familiar with Dan Deacon’s 2007 popular break-through Spiderman of the Rings gets his aesthetic: beat-driven, keyboard-colored songs that find unlikely but brightly lit alleyways connecting heroes as disparate as Raymond Scott and Steve Reich and Nintendo and Atari entertainment systems. Deacon plunders pop culture ephemera with high-minded electronic techniques and a mind ripened by the possibilities of recontextualization. That is, the Baltimore native and Wham City collective member turns cultural junk into artful gems. Ultimate Reality, his dual drummer/electronics/video project with Jimmy Joe Roche, mashes up Arnold Schwarzenegger films in Day-Glo stroboscopics timed to rapid beats and fanciful melodies on its self-titled DVD debut. Ultimate Reality performs in front of the film, followed by a traditional, lose-your-mind-and-sweat solo set in the floor by Deacon. Juan Huevos and Jake Dead hit the floor with beats and rhymes in the opening spot. Also, DJ George Brazil. Pay $10 at 9 p.m. to have maybe the best Monday of your 2008. Grayson Currin
