"PORTRAITS OF AIDS IN REINALDO ARENAS"
UNC CAMPUSGuillermo Cabrera Infante called fellow Cuban novelist Reinaldo Arenas the "chronicler of a country ruled not by Fidel Castro, already impotent, but by sex." Arenas' homosexualitya topic of his memoir Before Night Falls, adapted to a film starring Javier Bardemled to the author's arrest, but also his exile as a "social deviant" during the Mariela boatlift. After publishing in Cuba and abroad, Arenas finished his memoir as he died from AIDS. Colby College literature professor Jorge Olivares delivers a free talk titled "Portrait of AIDS in Reinaldo Arenas" at Dey Hall, Room 303 at 5 p.m. Matt Saldaña
