JANIVA MAGNESS
BLUE BAYOU CLUBIt's truly puzzling, but blues and soul singer Janiva Magness continues to reside well below the radar, though she's beaten out more recognizable names like Susan Tedeschi, Shemekia Copeland and Marcia Ball two years running for the Blues Music Awards' Best Contemporary Female Artist. Magness belies the contemporary part of the handle with a voice for the ages that balances sophistication and sauciness. Tickets for the 8:30 show are $14 in advance, $16 at the door. Rick Cornell
