When a Woman Ascends the Stairs
Griffith Film Theater, Duke CampusUnder the direction of Hank Okazaki, Duke’s Screen/ Society is the Triangle’s sole venue for screening foreign and domestic cinematic obscurities. With a network of sponsoring academic departments, the programming is always surprising and eclectic. Tonight, as part of a Cine-East series of films, Mikio Naruse’s 1963 When a Woman Ascends the Stairs, will get a fresh look in a 35mm print. The story of Keiko, a bar hostess in Tokyo’s Ginza district, shows her plight trying to survive through prostitution. It’s a theme often found in the work of one of Japan’s greatest filmmakers from an earlier era, Kenji Mizoguchi, and for fans of that director’s work, it will be fascinating to contrast the approachesboth ideologically and aesthetically.
