The UNC Board of Governors’ Friday meeting at NC A&T State University in Greensboro has been postponed due to forecasts of severe inclement weather.
Bad weather may have been the mildest of inconveniences faced by board members.
It would have been the last scheduled meeting before system president-elect Margaret Spellings takes office on March 1.
Students, faculty, and concerned citizens were ready, once again, to protest Spellings’ appointment. A new Faculty Forward Network survey of 1,400 UNC faculty members shows that many are unhappy about the direction of higher education in North Carolina, and feel that UNC doesn’t do enough to support increased public funding for the system.
Before being appointed UNC system president, Spellings served on the board of directors of Apollo Education Group, Inc., a parent company of University of Phoenix.

In Wednesday’s Faculty Forward announcement of the planned protest, SEIU’s Bryan Doyle wrote:
For-profit institutions, such as the University of Phoenix, engage in practices that negatively impact students of color. The University of Phoenix has a well-documented history of recruiting students of color, charging exorbitant tuition rates, and then failing to provide a quality education that allows their graduates to find meaningful employment.
The meeting will be rescheduled for sometime next week, according to the BoG announcement. Whenever it happens, you’d better believe board members will be talking over chants outside the meeting room.
