Joe Biden—the former vice president and, if you believe The Onion, the president of vice —has just added a stop at the Durham Performing Arts Center this June as part of his American Promise Tour. Charlotte is also included on the new leg of the tour, which aims to promote the former veep's new book and address issues spanning his entire political career.
Although Biden is known for his free-wheeling antics and off-the-cuff behavior, his latest tour offers a glimpse at his private life and reflections on some of the definitive moments in his forty-five years of public service. The conversation will also promote political discussion outside of the breaking news cycle and the overwhelming pace of social media.
Each audience member will receive a copy of Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship, and Purpose, Biden's memoir about his son, Beau Biden's, death in 2015. The book chronicles Biden's time as vice president while grappling with grief over the loss of his son to brain cancer.
Biden considered running for president in 2016 but opted against a campaign in order to focus on his family. Although Biden hasn’t said he's planning on running against President Donald Trump in 2020, there are some indications that he's already preparing to do so.
The North Carolina stops are just the latest leg in a tour that Biden launched last November with an interview with Oprah Winfrey, who many have hoped might run for office herself.
The list of acclaimed moderators who have already joined Biden in his talks includes director Aaron Sorkin, philanthropist Melinda Gates, and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power. Moderators for the upcoming stops have yet to be announced.
Pre-sale tickets for Biden’s DPAC talk will be available at 10 a.m. on April 5. The event itself will be held on June 6 at seven thirty p.m.
