Darwin’s Nightmare
Duke University–In recent months, the hottest title in one local video store has been The Constant Gardener. Those who have responded to that film’s portrait of Western governments exploiting African poverty at the behest of drug companies may want to venture to Darwin’s Nightmare, another film about an African biological catastrophe unrelieved by the presence of Rachel Weisz. This 2004 documentary by Hubert Sauper begins with the introduction of non-native Nile perch into Lake Victoria, then traces the unintended consequences (like planeloads of Kalishnikovs and the human miseries) they reap. A panel discussion follows the free 8 p.m. screening, both in Griffith Theater. –David Fellerath
