PAUL ORTIZ
INTERNATIONALIST BOOKSWhile the state of Florida rightly took a drubbing for its shoddy and rigged electoral systems after the debacle of 2000, UC-Santa Cruz professor Paul Ortiz reminds us that the Sunshine State has long been hostile to free elections. In his 2005 book, Emancipation Betrayed: The Hidden History of Black Organizing and White Violence in Florida from Reconstruction to the Bloody Election of 1920, Ortiz tells of valiant lengths to which African Americans fought for the franchise, in a state with the highest rate of lynching in the nation. Ortiz discusses his book at 7 p.m. Call 942-1740 for more information. David Fellerath
