1. What is there in your public record or other experience that demonstrates your ability to be an effective leader? Please be specific about your public and community service background
During my career as a chemist, I have led several projects while interacting with numerous people of differing backgrounds. This has helped me to learn to accomplish projects on time and effectively, and to work with different types of people.
2. How do you define yourself politically and how does your political philosophy show itself in your past achievements and present campaign platform?
Politically, I lean to the conservative philosophy when it comes to fiscal matters, and a more liberal when it comes to social issues. I will work for an open government that helps all of the people of Pittsboro, while maintaining a healthy level of taxation and government control.
3. Identify a principled stand you might be willing to take if elected that you suspect might cost you some popularity points with voters.
I do not support the Land Transfer Tax.
4. The Independents mission is to help build a just community in the Triangle. How would your election to office help further that goal?
I believe in fairness for all people, not just the loudest. I will work hard to ensure that everyone in Pittsboro has a voice and understands what is happening around them.
5. Do you support Chatham Countys proposed land-transfer tax? Why or why not?
I do not support the LTT. This referendum is being rushed through the legislative process, and there are still too many questions that need to be answered before the voters consider it.
6. Residential and commercial growth will change Pittsboros landscape and residents way of life drastically over the next several decades. What are the pros and cons of projects like Pittsboro Place and River Oaks coming to town (or not)? Separate from individual projects, please explain your overall vision for Pittsboros future.
Pittsboro will continue to grow in the future. How we manage that growth will dictate what the future landscape will entail. Pittsboro is also facing revenue problems with regards to needed upgrades to infrastructure, based on growth, and plain old age. Commercial projects can provide some of the revenue in the future. So a balancing act must be performed between changing Pittsboro for the better and providing the necessary services that it will require. With a careful eye, we can control how our future turns out.
7. The departure of the previous town manager was an ugly episode in town government. Now that youve hired a new manager, what do you want him to accomplish in the next six months? How about in the next year?
In six months, I would like to see him get up to speed on Pittsboro. Pittsboro is a unique town, and he will have to understand where we have been in the past and what we looking for in the future. In a year, I would like to see him take what he has learned about Pittsboro and begin to address the issue we are facing, such as wastewater, drinking water, etc.
8. If you are incumbent, please share some self-reflection about the pros and cons of the job the current mayor and council are doing leading the town. If you are a challenger, critique the job the incumbents are doing.
Mayor Voller has done an excellent job of elevating the position of Mayor to the front lines. He has worked hard to bring people to Pittsboro that can help solve some of our revenue problems. He is also very informed of the issues we are facing and what it will take to solve them.
