Wake County Board of Education
General election: Oct. 6
Early voting: Sept. 17-Oct. 3
Who votes? Wake County residents of the districts where races are taking place
In what races can I vote? You must live in the district in which a candidate is running.
What happens next? The candidate with the most votes wins. However, the second-place finisher can ask for a runoff if the first-place finisher doesn’t receive 50 percent plus 1 of the vote.
Runoff election: Nov. 3
Early voting: Oct. 15-31
Raleigh City Elections
General election: Oct. 6
Early voting: Sept. 17-Oct. 3
Who votes? Everyone who lives within the Raleigh city limits, including Raleigh residents who live in Durham County
In what races can I vote? For district races, you must live in the district in which a candidate is running. All Raleigh voters cast two votes in the at-large race, plus one for mayor.
What happens next? The candidate with the most votes wins. However, the second-place finisher can ask for a runoff if the first-place finisher doesn’t receive 50 percent plus 1 of the vote. In the at-large race, the margin is 25 percent plus 1 of the vote.

Durham City Elections
Primary election: Oct. 6
Early voting: Sept. 17-Oct. 3
Who votes? Everyone who lives inside the city limits
In what races can I vote? Since it is a primary, only contests with more than two candidates will be on the ballot: City Council Ward I and Ward II. Voters can cast ballots for all the wards, but candidates must live in the wards they represent.
What happens next? The top two vote-getters in the Ward I and Ward II races go to the general election, where they’ll join the mayoral and Ward III candidates.
General election: Nov. 3
Early voting: Oct. 15-31
Who votes: Everyone who lives inside the city limits
In what races can I vote? Wards I, II and III, and mayor. Ward III and the mayoral races have only two candidates running, so they are not on the primary ballot, only the general.

We base our endorsements on candidates’ answers to our questionnaires, voting records and meeting attendance if a candidate is an incumbent, background checks through public records databases, published news stories and shoe-leather reporting.
