Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist and author Doug Marlette was laid to rest on July 14 before an overflowing crowd at the Walnut Grove United Methodist Church outside of Hillsborough. Eulogists included authors Pat Conroy and Joe Klein. Marlette, 57, died July 10, when the car he was riding in went out of control on a rain-slicked road near Holly Springs, Miss., where he was visiting high school students working on a play based on his comic strip "Kudzu," his best-known work.
