On June 30, which the Iraqi government has declared “National Sovereignty Day,” U.S. troops began withdrawing from Iraqi cities and relocating to American military bases in the country. This is the casualty count since the U.S. invasion of Iraq began on March 20, 2003:

  • 4,321 U.S. troops killed
  • 31,156 U.S. troops injured
  • 318 Coalition troops killed
  • 454 contractors killed
  • 100,911 Iraqi civilians killed

(There have been 715 U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan.)
