A letter to the Independent (Back Talk, April 26) makes a flatteringly inaccurate statement about me. This of course presents me with a dilemma, since I certainly do not want to repudiate the flattery, but I do feel compelled to correct the inaccuracy, particularly since it reflects somewhat on a man for whom I have a very high regard–my colleague Rep. David Price (D-N.C.).
The writer asks why North Carolina’s 4th District cannot “elect a congressman allied with the likes of … Barney Frank.” The answer is that it can and does. I have collaborated closely with Rep. Price during all of his years in Congress, on a wide range of issues, and I have a great deal of respect for his intellect, integrity and the values he brings to the job. That is, I consider Dave Price to be very much someone who is “allied with the likes of” me, and I am very pleased that the voters of his district have continued to allow him to bring his committed, thoughtful progressivism to bear on our deliberations.
