Thanks for beer column
I read the article about Boylan Bridge Brewpub and LoneRider Brewery (“New brews debut,” Beer Hopping, by Julie Johnson, Jan. 7). It was a very nice read. I was able to go to LoneRider’s brewery for a tasting and a tour a couple weeks back, and both the hefeweizen and the porter were very good. I think they will do nicely in this market. I heard about Boylan but have not yet been able to sample. Look forward to it, though!
“Conviviality” … nice word! I had to look that one up.

Thanks for the Indy
My family and I came to Durham two years ago after living in many U.S. cities over the years. Having read many independent newspapers, I can safely say that yours is at the top of the listand I am not easily impressed. Good on ya!

Defiance is a true story
Movie critic Nathan Gelgud expresses difficulty about the claim that the movie Defiance is not based on actual events but that it is in fact a true story (“Houses divided,” Jan. 14). That is the case. Though the events depicted in the film may not be actual, there is no doubt that the Bielski partisan group operating in Western Belorussia (Belarus) between 1942 and 1944 was one of the most significant Jewish resistance efforts against Nazi Germany during World War II. For more Bielski history, see the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum Web site (www.ushmm.org).
