The Gulf of Mexico isn’t the world’s only drilling disaster. Mining the tar sands in Alberta, Canada, wrote Barry Yeoman in the March issue of Audubon (“Crude Awakening”), could destroy the breeding grounds for millions of birds. Oil captured from these tar sands could be the top source of U.S. crude oil imports this year.

In the above photo, employees of Lush cosmetics protest the practice in Raleigh. Wearing shirts and holding signs that read “Tar sands: the most destructive project on Earth” and “Time for an oil change or we’ll lose it all,” Lush employees stood outside their store and urged customers to sign a postcard with a letter to President Obama stressing the importance of clean energy.
