This is a seven-county map showing closed and active landfills, including those accepting construction, demolition (C&D), industrial, household, hazardous and solid waste (SW). The map does not include yard waste or compost facilities or septage haulers.
A note about the data: The source is the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Due to the limitations of the data, some exact addresses were not available, so those locations are approximate. In addition, some current landfills have been built or expanded at the sites of old landfills, so there may be multiple facilities listed for one address.
The landfills built before 1983 were not required to be lined; according to DENR documents, most of these landfills leak, or are likely to leak, contaminants into the groundwater.
