“The Only French and Spanish Language Immersion Montessori School in North Carolina”

International Montessori School is a Spanish and French immersion Montessori School in Southwest Durham serving families throughout the Triangle. Our school merges the Montessori teaching method, renowned for high-quality academic programs and the endorsement of peace and respect, with full language immersion instruction.

The results are far-reaching: biliterate and bilingual children grow up practicing tolerance and negotiating cultural differences. Language immersion education research shows that:

  • Learning a second language at a young age requires little effort
  • Bilingualism increases cognitive flexibility and opportunities
  • Language studies increase cultural understanding.

International Montessori School offers Spanish and French immersion programs for children 3 years old through third grade. All teaching takes place in the target language except for courses in English-language reading and writing. While our current student body includes children from many different nationalities, the majority of our students come from English-only homes.

We offer French and Spanish Summer Language Camps for students 3 to 12 years old. These camps are particularly effective for language acquisition since the target language vocabulary is organically absorbed through sensorial activities such as music, arts and crafts, and hands-on projects. Our Spanish and French Elementary School is the only of its kind in the Triangle and offers students all the flexibility and positive outcomes of Montessori education plus fluency in a second language. Students need not be proficient to enter our program because at this age their language absorption rate enables them to quickly learn the second language! Our elementary program includes art, music, and physical education. It will expand to 6th grade in the near future.
