DeeDee Lavinder, a local resale shopper and mom, opened The Red Hen in March. In addition to providing a place to recycle quality items for moms and little ones, she also wanted to showcase local talent, provide a retail venue for hard-to-find essentials, and be a source for unique and thoughtful gifts.
The hand-selected variety of new and like-new clothing, equipment, books, and toys is amazing. All clothing is meticulously screened for blemishes of any kind and it is not unusual to find items brand new with tags. Sizes for children extend from newborn to 6X. There is also an entire room devoted to maternity and nursing wear complete with a large dressing area and “try-on” belly. Gear, equipment, and furniture are researched at the Consumer Product Safety Commission web site. Toys are tested, thoroughly cleaned and packaged. All of that attention and the prices are still fantastictypically less than 50% of retail.
The Red Hen retails the wares of 14 local businesses (and counting) providing products such as jewelry, nursing covers, music, burp cloths, and art projects. Hard-to-find items include Fuzzi Bunz cloth diapering systems, Ergo Baby Carriers, Bravado Nursing Bras, and Baby Banz UV-protected summer gear to name a few.
The shopping experience and customer service of The Red Hen are unrivaled. A large, well-stocked play area will entertain children of all agesnot to mention the fort, slide, sandbox, and picnic table in the backyard. There is a fully-stocked diaper changing station as well as complimentary gift wrapping and drinks. Be sure to ask about their “Wish List” program, the “Buy Back” program, and the “Baby Registry.” You may even qualify for “Cluck Bucks” (the frequent buyer reward card).
