A woman being held at the Durham County Detention Facility was found dead today, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

In a press release this evening, the Sheriff’s Office gave few details about the death of Jean Carolyn McGirt, fifty-six. According to the statement, a member of the detention staff found her unresponsive and “immediately performed life-saving measures.”

In compliance with standard protocol, the Durham County Sheriff’s Office notified the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) of an in-custody death at the Durham County Detention Facility on Saturday, August 25th. A member of the detention staff found Jean Carolyn McGirt, 56 unresponsive and immediately performed life-saving measures. The detention staff and medical personnel performed CPR until EMS arrived. Paramedics were unable to resuscitate Ms. McGirt and she was pronounced dead at the detention facility. McGirt’s body was transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the exact cause of death.

In compliance with standard protocol, the Durham County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a death investigation. The findings of that investigation will be submitted to the NC Department of Health and Human Services. Because of the expectation of privacy for the decedent, no further information is available at this time.

McGirt’s death is the second at the jail this year and the fourth in two years.

Dashawn Evans was found unresponsive in his cell by a detention officer on May 27. A report by the state medical examiner later determined he had been killed by fentanyl and heroin toxicity.
