A man has died after being shot by a Durham police officer responding to a domestic altercation, according to the Durham Police Department.

The DPD has not released the manโ€™s name. The officers have been placed on administrative leave with pay, as is standard procedure. The DPD didnโ€™t say how many officers were involved, or their names,

In a news release, the DPD said the shooting occurred around five a.m. on Bevel Court, while officers were responding to a โ€œdomestic incident between a man and a woman who were involved in a physical altercation.โ€

โ€œOnce the officers arrived they encountered a 30-year-old man who was uncooperative and combative, and a struggle ensued. During the struggle shots were fired by an officer and the man sustained life-threatening injuries,โ€ the news release says.

According to the DPD, officers adminstered life-savings measures, and the man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident, and the DPD will release a five-day report.

โ€œWe would like to express condolences to everyone involved in this unfortunate situation. We are always saddened by any loss of life,โ€ said Police Chief C.J. Davis.

Itโ€™s the fourth fatal shooting involving Durham police in the past two-and-a-half years.
