Good morning, readers.
This weekend, one of Durham’s most influential political groups, the Committee on the Affairs of Black People, held its endorsement meeting on Zoom.
When it came time to endorse candidates for the Durham Public School board’s only contested seat this cycle, a Durham father, Keith Corbett, made an allegation against one of the candidates, Atrayus Goode, who has worked in youth mentoring for his entire career.
Corbett said Goode sexually harassed his daughter in 2013 while, just out of high school, she was working at Durham’s Institute for Minority Economic Development where Goode was a manager.
Goode, who is running for the at-large seat on the board and was endorsed by the seat’s current occupant, Alexandra Valladeres, did not hear the accusation in real time. Goode told the INDY that the statements made against him are false.
The INDY reviewed a recording of the committee meeting, public records, and spoke with multiple sources to investigate the allegation made against Goode this weekend. Read my report here.
Have a good Thursday,
— Jane
