Three New Bars to Try in Durham

Good morning, readers.

The moment I left Delafia, Durham’s newest wine bar, after visiting it for the first time several weeks ago, I called INDY culture editor Sarah Edwards and waited three rings before remembering she was on vacation and hanging up.

It was a Thursday afternoon and the sun was still fairly high in the sky, so I wasn’t sure who else, besides the editor who had assigned me the story, to cold call with a happy-rant about an experience I’d just had at a bar without causing concern. I settled on texting her a synopsis: “u have to go to delafia / they hypnotized me idk what happened / most magical place i’ve been in a minute.”

Finally, today, I get to tell all of you about it. The bar’s focus is natural wine—the farm-to-table version of wine, essentially, made on a smaller scale and with minimal intervention—which might seem “a little different and out there,” acknowledges owner Jesse Gerstl. But you don’t need to be a connoisseur to enjoy it.

Just as exciting are two other new bars that opened in downtown Durham in recent months: High Dive, a refined dive in the basement of the Kress Building; and Club ERA, a nightclub in the basement of The Fruit.
