Good morning, readers.

The general election is three weeks away. Early voting across the state begins tomorrow. And we at the INDY have made our endorsements in all the local races in Triangle, from races for U.S. Congressional seats to county Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor.

Our endorsements follow a 40-year tradition of this publication making candidate recommendations to readers, and weโ€™ve adhered to a rigorous process to bring you our decisions. We relied on our own reporting, public records, and other publicly available information, and we considered factors such as individual skill sets, past experience in governing and civic life, incumbentsโ€™ achievements while serving in office, and volunteer experience in making these endorsements.

Itโ€™s no doubt clear by now that this is a pivotal election, and while weโ€™re no longer making endorsements in statewide or national races, we encourage readers to seek out good information on those races to inform their votes. Weโ€™re happy to make recommendations about where to look for information on specific races or candidates; just email us with your questions.

This is also the first presidential election cycle in North Carolina where voters will need to show a photo ID at the polls. You can learn about what kind of IDs are accepted here.ย

Voters can register to vote at any early voting location in their county of residence and cast their vote on the same day. Hereโ€™s information on early voting in Wake, Durham, and Orange Counties. Early voting runs through November 2.

Please make a plan to vote in the next couple of weeks. You can download our clip-out voter guide before you head into the ballot box or cut it out of the newspaper and bring it with you. We have much more information, including reported stories and, coming soon, candidate questionnaires, available on our 2024 General Election homepage.ย ย

Thank you as always for looking to the INDY to help inform your vote.

Have a good Wednesday.

โ€”Jane

Durham

Op-Ed: All seven members of the Durham City Council have a message for votersโ€”say yes to the two municipal bonds on your ballot.ย

Bill Adair, the Knight Professor of the Practice of Journalism & Public Policy at Duke, has a new book out about lying in politics. He spoke to John Stewart at The Daily Show about it last week.

Wake

The city council election in Raleighโ€™s District A pits an anti-establishment activist incumbent against a city planning expert.ย

Orange

In a special election, two candidates square off for an open seat on the Carrboro Town Council.

North Carolina

North Carolina lost out on $70 million in disaster prep funds from FEMA due to the state’s building code standards; $18 million of that money could have gone to flood resilience.
