Good morning, readers.
Today is the first day of Durham Public Schools’ rotational bus service plan.
That means that DPS will provide transportation to students for four days a week, while families will be responsible for transportation on a single predetermined day each week.
The plan, an acknowledgment of the district’s inability to fulfill a basic obligation to students, is far from a real fix to the DPS transit crisis of the past few months as increased ridership and a shortage of drivers have left some students waiting hours for buses that never arrive.
But it is an attempt to reduce at least some of the chaos by acknowledging the current limits of DPS staffing and allowing families to plan ahead. The district has said that it’s just a temporary measure while school board members have wondered if it will need to continue past the winter holiday break.
Parents who spoke at the recent board meeting were generally in favor of the plan. Lakewood Elementary School parent Jenna Crowther called it “not ideal,” but added that it would “allow our school community to more proactively organize to fill the gaps caused by the crisis.”
As we cover the rollout of the rotational bus service this week, I’d like to open up my inbox to hear more from DPS parents, staff, and community members. Is the plan working? Is it making daily transportation better? Worse? The same? However it goes, please send your observations or anecdotes over to [email protected]. I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
And have a good Monday.
