Good morning, readers.

Summer poses a unique challenge for kids and families who rely on local schools for daily meals. In one Cary neighborhood, a nonprofit, A Doorway to Hope, is working to fill that gap.

INDY intern Daneen Khan spent time recently at Chatham Estates, a mobile home park near downtown where most of the neighborhood children get free and reduced-price meals during the school year. (You may remember our 2023 reporting on Chatham Estates when it was put up for sale, threatening to displace residents; it remains on the market).

Four nights a week, volunteers from the nonprofit visit the neighborhood to serve free dinners and play with the kids, giving parents a respite as well.

“Cary is often seen as an affluent town, but many people overlook the pockets of real need within it,” says coordinator Katie Oakley. “Every community, no matter how prosperous it appears, has areas that could truly benefit from resources and caring volunteers.”
