Good morning, readers.
Something tells me that not many of you live in Zebulon, population 10,000, way out in the easternmost corner of Wake County. If not, you might think that this newsletter blurb about Zebulon’s town government is not for you and be tempted to scroll away.
Before you do, consider this: in the past year, two Zebulon town managers, an assistant town manager and a town commissioner have resigned, alleging that the town board is mismanaged and unaccountable. In a lawsuit against the town, a local developer accused a different commissioner of a beekeeping-related conflict of interest. A petition calling on town leaders to resign en masse garnered almost as many signatures (423) as the number of ballots cast in the most recent mayoral election (558). And now, the mayor is running to keep his seat against four opponents, including two commissioners named in the petition and one of the town managers who resigned.
In other words, Zebulon may be small, but it’s not boring. And the stakes of this upcoming mayoral race are not low. Residents say transparency and integrity are missing from their town government. And this year, they have the opportunity to make a change.
If you’re feeling intrigued but a little confused, we unscrambled the most noteworthy moments from the year-long municipal government meltdown in a handy timeline format. And we’ll bring you more Zebulon reporting as election season heats up.
Have a good Friday.
