- A “Third Space for Work” in Durham
- A Neighborhood Housing Battle in Raleigh
- “A Beauty” of a Banh Mi in Cary
- An Unsurprising Campaign Announcement
- A Local Gov Discussion with INDY’s Justin Laidlaw

Good morning, readers.
Durham is getting a new coworking space that promises you’ll never have to choose between the coffee shop and the office again.
Is that a good thing?
Switchyards, opening early next month in a converted Foster Street dry cleaner plant, calls itself a “third place for work,” a phrase that collapses in on itself if you think about it too hard.
The Atlanta-based chain, which has 27 locations across eight states, charges $100 monthly for round-the-clock access—half what American Underground costs, well below WeWork’s rates.
The Durham location features one big room with varied seating, a bookable conference room, a no-talking room, and phone booths. There are also coffee machines that play motivational montages while your drink brews, a wall decorated with an Everything Bagels receipt and a doctored photo of Princess Diana wearing Switchyards swag, and stroopwafels. It’s trying very hard to not feel like an office.
Which might be exactly what we want now, in a country that ranks bottom of the barrel for work-life balance.
Durham memberships are capped at 250. Recent openings across the country have sold out in minutes.
Read the full story below. And have a good Tuesday.
