West Virginia’s Pat White rallied the Mountaineers from a 10 point deficit with under three minutes to play, beating the Tar Heels 28-24.

T.J. Yates threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Hakeem Nicks with 2 minutes and 53 seconds remaining to give the Heels a 10 point lead. The play would have solidified the game, but Noel Devine returned the kickoff 102 yards for a score, narrowing the Carolina lead to only three points.

Carolina then ran the ball on four consecutive plays and picked up a first down. With the clock running down, Anthony Leonard stripped Anthony Elzy and the Mountaineers recovered with less than two minutes remaining.

White then ended his college career by completing six passes, including a 9-yard touchdown pass to Tito Gonzales to give the Mountaineers the lead. White threw for 201 yards and a touchdown.

The game ended on a desperation pass by Yates, who finished 18 of 26 for 184 yards and three touchdowns, that sailed over Anthony Elzy and was intercepted by West Virginia.

The Tar Heels struck first on a 10-yard touchdown pass to Nicks that capped an 8-minute drive.

West Virginia’s offense sputtered until White scrambled for a 56-yard rushing touchdown that tied the game.

Ryan Houston and Shaun Draughn carried the ball nine times for 56 yards on the following possession, setting up for a 49-yard field goal by Casey Barth midway through the second quarter.

White then completed seven passes before Devine ran in for a score from one yard out with a minute left in the half.

Carolina failed to move the ball and, West Virginia drove to the 31 yard line and missed the field goal as time expired.

The Heels marched down the field to open the second half on a 14 play drive with a balanced passing and rushing attack that ended with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Foster, giving Carolina a 17-14 lead.

Both offenses struggled for the rest of the third quarter, combining for only 25 yards of offense. The Tar Heels marched down the field early in the fourth quarter, chewing up 9 minutes of offense before an acrobatic catch by Hakeem Nicks in the endzone gave Carolina a 10-point lead.

West Virginia then rallied with two late touchdowns to win the game.

The Tar Heels dropped to 8-5 on the season, losing three out of their last four games and severely disappointing the Carolina faithful after having a chance of winning the ACC Coastal Division in early November.

West Virginia ended Pat White’s career with a somewhat disappointing 9 win season, despite being ranked eighth in the preseason polls.
