Durham’s own “field of dreams” is back.
Renovations are complete at Durham Athletic Park, where the Bulls played for most of the 20th Century ending in 1994 and which was made world famous in the iconic film “Bull Durham” starring Kevin Costner (pictured) and Susan Sarandon.
And a grand re-opening is on Saturday.
The event, which will run from noon to 5 p.m., will feature a softball game with former pro players, local coaches and politicians; several well-known mascots from around the area; the Durham Divas cheerleaders; a children’s play area; and free food and soft drinks.
Minor League Baseball will use the facility as a training center for business and facility operations in the baseball industry. It will also be the home park for both N.C. Central and for Durham School of the Arts.
“We’re pleased to be able to reopen Durham Athletic Park with this public celebration,” said MiLB President Pat O’Conner said in a press release. “The vision of the citizens and community leaders to make this possible speaks well of their affection for the DAP.”
Added Durham mayor Bill Bell, “A big ‘thank you’ goes out to our citizens who overwhelmingly voted to support this endeavor and bring our beloved Durham Athletic Park back to its former glory with all the added amenities of today.
“A Durham icon, one we are known for throughout the country, is now restored and can proudly stand as another Durham historic landmark that says so much about the wonderful community we are and will continue to be.”
