A big second half made the difference on Thursday night in the 60-46 win at Clemson, as the Blue Devils bounced back from Monday night’s awful 79-49 loss at old nemesis Connecticut.
Today’s opponent is Boston College (8-10, 2-5 ACC), which is showing signs of improvement under new coach Erik Johnson but lost to Duke 90-53 on Jan. 6 in Chestnut Hill.
Duke (17-1, 7-0) will honor its 2003 Final Four team at halftime.
The Eagles put up a good fight, but Duke prevails again 80-56.
Duke takes the lead at 5-3 on an Alexis Jones 3-pointer with 18:19 left in the first half, but takes a while to pull away.
The Blue Devils lead 49-33 at the break behind 12 points from Tricia Liston and 10 from Chloe Wells. Kristen Doherty has 10 at the half for BC. Duke shoots 56.3 percent to the Eagles’ 37.0 over the half.
Duke’s biggest lead is 28, at 71-43 on a Chelsea Gray bucket with 9:32 to go.
Haley Peters leads Duke with 15 points and ties her career high with 13 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Chloe Wells adds a season-high 13 points on perfect shooting from the floor (5-for-5, 3-for-3 on 3-pointers) while Liston and Gray add 12 each. Elizabeth Williams scores 10 and ties her career high with five assists.
Doherty leads the Eagles with 14 points while Kerri Shields adds 13 and Nicole Boudreau 11.
Duke shoots 46.9 percent to BC’s 30.4, outrebounds the visitors 47-28 and commits 17 turnovers to the Eagles’ 15.
They said it …
Duke coach Joanne P. McCallie: “I thought we had two great halves of defense and Chloe and Lex and Chelsea really got that generated for us to start with. Offensively we were sharp in the first half, a little bit less so in the second. But overall I loved the offensive balance and productivity.”
Johnson: “What we were able to do was stay with them and withstand some of those streaks. Tricia Liston was on fire in the first half, but she’s one of the best shooters in the nation. I really believe my team will never quit. I felt like there might have been some individual performances where people got down on themselves, but that’s part of the learning experience.”
Peters: “I think we did a great job today in working off each other in terms of our energy. It was awesome to see Chloe go 5-for-5. Everyone was aggressive and feeding off each other’s energy. I think our energy was a lot better today than it has been.”
Wells: “I’m just great that I’m back (after a suspension last season and stress fractures to start the season) and have the opportunity again. Every day I’m just going hard whether it’s on the court or off the court just trying to get everybody together.”
What does it all mean?
That Duke seems to be fine after the recent loss, and that BC is getting better.
