There were no surprises for the Triangle’s blue-clad national powers on the opening night of ACC women’s basketball Friday.

No. 5 North Carolina walloped the College of Charleston 88-57 at the Smith Center, while No. 6 Duke annihilated homestanding Houston Baptist 104-35 in the homecoming game for junior wing Karima Christmas.

Laura Broomfield (pictured) and She’la White scored 14 points apiece to lead the Tar Heels, who were without guard Italee Lucas as she sat out with a sore knee injured in practice this week. Cetera DeGraffenreid and Tierra Ruffin-Pratt added 13 points each for UNC.

Ericka Williams scored 12 points to lead the Cougars while Jade Hughes added 11.

Duke rolls, too.

Bridgette Mitchell led Duke with 18 points, while Krystal Thomas added a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Joy Cheek added 16 points for Duke, which visits Texas A&M on Sunday.

Destini Texada led the Huskies with six points.
