KENAN STADIUM/CHAPEL HILL It’s going to be a pretty soggy afternoon as UNC hosts Idaho for the first time today.

It’s a rare purchase of a home game against an FBS team, meaning the Tar Heels will be writing the Vandals an $800,000 check and not making the return trip to the Kibbie Dome.

UNC (2-2) is looking to get above .500 for the first time since the opening win over Elon, while Idaho (0-4) is looking for what would be one of the biggest wins in school history.

And the Tar Heels get the win in a big way, with a school-record point total in a 66-0 demolition.

UNC scores with a flashy play on its first possession, as Bryn Renner takes the lateral from Gio Bernard on a flea-flicker and finds Sean Tapley behind the defense for a 36-yard TD connection. Casey Barth’s kick punctuates the four-play, 67-yard march at 13:32.

The Tar Heels double the lead at 9:36, as Erik Highsmith recovers teammate Eric Ebron’s fumble into the end zone to finish a seven-play, 51-yard drive. Barth’s try makes it 14-0.

It goes to 21-0 at 6:51 on a two-yard Bernard run and Barth’s boot, two plays after Romar Morris blocks a punt and the Tar Heels take over at the Idaho 5.

And Renner completes the first quarter scoring at 0:53, completing a 35-yard TD pass to Quinshad Davis with Barth converting.

Bernard makes it 35-0 with 10:22 left in the half on a 68-yard sprint with Barth again adding the try.

It goes to 38-0 at 4:51 on a 33-yard Barth field goal.

And A.J. Blue completes the first-half scoring on a three-yard run at 1:54 followed by Barth’s boot.

Marquise Williams hits Davis for a 35-yard score with 5:51 left in the third, with Barth’s kick making it 52-0.

And Williams goes in from a yard out at 1:55, with Barth’s try running it to 59-0.

Williams scores again from four yards out with 13:12 to go, and Barth’s kick gives the team the school scoring record.

UNC finishes with 575 yards total offense to 189 for the Vandals.

Renner goes 14-for-19 with the three touchdowns and an interception. Bernard finishes with 150 all-purpose yards and two TDs, while Williams has 61 yards rushing with the two TDs and 57 yards passing for another.

UNC coach Larry Fedora: “I was really pleased with the way our team played. From the very beginning it was a point of emphasis this week, because everybody said we were a second-half team and we couldn’t start fast. … This says this team is very capable of doing some special things. If we keep preparing the way we’re preparing the last couple of weeks and we keep playing with a lot of energy, we can do some really good things.”

Idaho coach Robb Akey: “The positive thing is the game is over. We didn’t start well, we didn’t play well, Carolina played a hell of a game and we didn’t. We’ve got to get this one kicked out of our memory banks. That’s not an easy thing to do, but we will find a way to make that happen and we’ll get ourselves rolling.”

Bernard: “I think a lot of people have been saying (UNC) can’t do much in the first half. With a game like Virginia Tech coming up, we have to be able to start fast, smart and physical and not just wait until the second half to come back.”

Renner: “It always feels good when you come out of the game at halftime and already have it in hand. I was really happy for the other guys to get in the game.”

What does it all mean?
That the Tar Heels get the easy win they wanted, and that Idaho heads back to the Gem State a lot richer.
